Scheme of Work

Sixty-three pages completing the two-year course. Year 10 was the organism; this is the population — the genome, inheritance, selection, ecosystems, and feeding a growing population out of them. The remaining fifty-two of the subject content’s one hundred and forty-three statements are taught here, and every one is mapped to the phase that teaches it. Seventeen separate-only statements are marked, the fifth half-term teaches no new content so it can be spent on diagnosis and technique, and the tiering page carries the arithmetic most departments never see.

Ten sections per unit, in the same order every time. Phases rather than single lessons, because science is timetabled at around three hours a week.

Five half-termly units, and the fifth teaches nothing new. Every statement in the specification is discharged by the end of Spring 2 so the final half-term can be spent on diagnosis and examination technique rather than on content a student would have no time to consolidate.

Written to sit beside the Year 10 book. Three of the five units open with a diagnostic made of Year 10 recall rather than of new material, because what survived the summer is what actually decides how Year 11 goes — a class that cannot say what meiosis produces will not follow inheritance in November. A page of load-bearing joints between the two years names each dependency, and the revision unit uses it in reverse: to trace a Year 11 weakness back to where it originates.

Board-neutral, with the limits stated rather than buried. The content, the Foundation and Higher split, the mathematical skills and the apparatus and techniques are national; the named required practicals are set by each awarding organisation. AT6, field sampling, is the one apparatus criterion Year 10 cannot meet, and it is met here — across the two years all eight are covered.
