Key Stage 3 and GCSE Geography, sequenced

Year 7 · Year 8 · Year 9 · Year 10 · Year 11 · 30 units in all

Six half-termly units an academic year, set out as one sequence table instead of a page per lesson. Each year is written backwards from what the next one states it assumes on entry, so Year 7 ends where Year 8 needs it to start and nothing is taught twice by accident. Every unit maps to the statutory content. The GCSE books run to 87 to 90 pages each against 60 to 65 pages at Key Stage 3, with printable diagnostics at the back of each. Most departments just call it a SOW.

Board-neutral by construction. No board’s specification is followed. The units map to the Department for Education’s own subject content, which AQA, OCR and Pearson Edexcel each have to cover however they order or label it. A department teaches this sequence whichever board they sit. A change of board does not mean a change of scheme.

Ninety pages, board-neutral by construction: every requirement comes from the DfE subject content for GCSE geography, and no specification is reproduced anywhere. Three things are computed from the units rather than claimed: that all seven named topics are taught, that all fifteen statements of the mathematics and statistics appendix are taught and revisited, and that case studies reach at least two countries other than the UK. Fieldwork is planned as the 15% of the qualification it actually is, with the write-up given three times the teaching of the day out, because that is how the Department weights it.

Year 11 Geography Scheme of Work

Eighty-seven pages, and deliberately not the same shape as Year 10. The remaining content runs through autumn and spring and finishes at Easter; the last half-term is synthesis and then revision driven by evidence rather than by a topic list: sit a paper, code every question four ways, group by diagnosed need, reteach, reattempt, and measure whether it worked. Year 11 introduces no new geographical skill, which is what makes a whole term of diagnosis affordable.
