Science
Six half-termly units across one academic year. Year 7 built three foundations — the cell, the particle model and force. This year turns each of them into a mechanism, and photosynthesis is taught as respiration's complement rather than as a second equation to memorise backwards.

Ten sections per unit, in the same order every time. Phases rather than single lessons, because science is timetabled at about three hours a week.
This is the equipment-heaviest year in the key stage, so the practicals page matters most here — twenty-three practicals, each with the significant hazard named and the technician's lead time, including the ones that need a decision before they are timetabled at all.
Two units carry the misconceptions that do the most damage later. Unit 1a separates respiration from breathing, two words students have used interchangeably for eleven years. Unit 2a settles whether current is used up by putting two ammeters either side of a bulb and letting the meters answer it.
Every duration, context and assessment word is a strong default rather than a fixed rule. Year 8 means ages 12–13, or S1–S2 in Scotland.
