Physical education is two subjects in one department: the core lessons every student takes, and the examined qualification a minority sit. The second is a written subject with a practical component, which is the reverse of what most students expect when they choose it.

This booklet is written for the whole department at once. A head of PE can read it as a curriculum and quality-assurance document; a teacher can open it at the page they need before going out in the rain. The specifications were read from the current documents, and where the boards differ — and no two are built the same way — the difference is stated.
