Six half-termly units across one academic year, covering all four strands of the programme of study. Reading opens the year because writing improves fastest in students who have just read closely, and spoken English closes it because it draws on everything the other five units build.

Ten sections per unit, in the same order every time. Lessons are one row each rather than a page each — enough to teach from, not so much that it cannot be maintained across a whole department.
One principle applies to every unit and is stated once at the front: every claim about a text is followed by evidence from it, in writing and in discussion, from the first week of Year 7.
Every duration, text, task and assessment word is a strong default rather than a fixed rule. Year 7 means ages 11–12, or P7–S1 in Scotland.
