A Level Chemistry
Revision Guide
The whole of A level chemistry in thirteen pages: how the course is assessed, then the content the DfE names — amounts of substance, atomic structure, bonding and structure, energetics and entropy, kinetics and rate equations, equilibria and acids, redox and electrode potentials, periodicity and the groups, organic chemistry, isomerism and benzene, and modern analytical techniques — closing on working scientifically and the Practical Endorsement. Five drawings on every page, all made for the guide: six molecular shapes each at its true bond angle, a reaction profile whose peak is solved for so it sits exactly at the activation energy the arrow measures, two Maxwell–Boltzmann curves normalised to the same area, a hexaaqua copper ion going pale blue to deep blue, an infrared spectrum running 4000 to 500 the way one actually does, and benzene beside an alkene to show why one substitutes and the other adds. Three core ideas, a worked example in three steps, three misconceptions and eight cover-and-test questions on every page.

Everything else this site has for Chemistry: Chemistry teaching resources

A level chemistry is one subject taught from several different specifications. The Department for Education sets the content every board must cover, and leaves each board the order, the examples and the required practicals. This guide is that content in the DfE’s own order, with the assessment rules Ofqual sets around it, both quoted word for word. It runs to more pages than its neighbours in the series because chemistry has more required content than they do: energetics and kinetics get a page each so that entropy and rate equations are taught rather than mentioned, the periodic table is lifted out of redox so group chemistry gets a page of its own, and benzene, the two stereoisomerisms and the two polymerisations take a second organic page. No paper numbers, no component names and no mark totals appear anywhere in it.
Every number in it is computed by the code that draws the figure beside it, and asserted before the guide will build. The relative atomic mass of chlorine comes from the two peak heights you can see; the orders of reaction are recovered from three sets of concentrations by taking logarithms, and the rate constant is divided out of the first run; the enthalpy change for calcium carbonate decomposing comes out of a Hess cycle through the elements, and the temperature at which that reaction turns feasible is that enthalpy divided by its entropy change; the cell potential is a measured gap on a drawn scale; and benzene’s delocalisation energy is a subtraction, three times the hydrogenation of one double bond against the figure measured for the ring. Where a drawing has to be right as well as the arithmetic — the geometry of a bent molecule, the direction of a buffer’s arrows, the intensities in a multiplet, the way an infrared axis runs — it is checked by its own test, because a figure generated from correct numbers can still draw something false.
