A working manual for a GCSE geography department, and the one book in this series whose Part One runs two pages longer: on J383 the Geographical Skills component is 40% of the qualification and contains no AO1 at all, which is a teaching problem the other specifications do not set. Two pages here exist in no other book in the series, because no other specification is built this way. On J383, Component 03 — Geographical Skills — is 40% of the qualification, carries the synoptic assessment by design, and contains no AO1 whatsoever. Nearly three quarters of every skills mark in the specification sits inside that one ninety-minute paper. Two one-hour papers decide 60% of the grade on what a student knows; a single longer paper decides the rest on what they can do, and no amount of content revision reaches it. The book sets out what follows for curriculum time, for where skills are taught, and for how the two fieldwork enquiries are prepared.
OCR runs two GCSE geographies — A (Geographical Themes) and B (Geography for Enquiring Minds). This book is Geography A, J383, and says so on its cover, because a department on the other one would be reading the wrong paper architecture.
The assessment objectives are worded almost identically across boards and weighted very differently. Check the board and the specification you teach before buying.
