Mathematics Key Terms
Every word a maths department teaches, Year 7 to A Level, in one A4 book. Each key stage gets its own pages: the terms grouped the way they are taught rather than alphabetically, a definition that fits on two lines, and a worked example beside almost every one. Each key stage opens on one real equation or identity, annotated — the notation a maths course is actually written in — and the numbers on it appear again beside the same words in the list; a dozen further pages carry a real drawing where a sentence will not do, for the bands a picture genuinely teaches faster: a gradient, a circle theorem, a trigonometric ratio, a box plot, a tangent and normal, a resultant force. Then a page on using the words: the ones the assessment itself is written in, the false friends that mean something else in a maths classroom — a limit is not a maximum allowance, a series is not a sequence, discrete is not discreet — the same point written weakly and then properly, and what each word becomes at the next key stage.

- Referenced to the DfE's national curriculum programmes of study for mathematics at Key Stage 3 and its non-statutory framework, the Mathematics GCSE subject content and assessment objectives (June 2013), and the Mathematics AS and A level content (December 2014), with Ofqual's GCE subject level conditions and requirements for mathematics; 359 of 387 terms appear by name in one of those documents and the cover says so, the rest are standard mathematical vocabulary defined here in plain English; no awarding body is named, and nothing a board decides for itself appears in the A Level pages
