A Level English Literature
Revision Guide

The whole of A level English literature in twenty-one pages: how the five objectives are weighted and what the course must contain, then reading in different ways, how writers shape meaning, and poetry, prose and drama in turn, a toolkit of twenty-four terms, building an argument and a model analytical paragraph, quoting and referencing, context, traditions and genres, connections across texts and a model comparison, different interpretations, unseen texts and the independent study, closing on judgement and independence, the mistakes that cost marks and a final knowledge check. Every page has a drawing made for it, a worked example in three steps, three misconceptions and cover-and-test questions.

Cover of A Level English Literature Revision Guide

A level English literature is one subject taught from several specifications, each with its own set texts. The Department for Education sets what every one of them must contain, and Ofqual sets the five assessment objectives and the non-examination assessment. This guide teaches that common ground and the methods every route needs, quoting both documents word for word, and says plainly where your specification decides.

The DfE's document is three pages long. It fixes the reading (at least eight texts across poetry, prose and drama, three before 1900 with a Shakespeare play, one after 2000, and an unseen text), the knowledge students must show and the skills they must use. It names no text, no critic and no critical approach, so this guide names none as a requirement and tells you to check your own specification for the texts and approaches it sets.

Every extract from a real author is public domain and was checked word for word against the published text. Every other example is invented for the guide and labelled as illustrative. Every quotation from the DfE and Ofqual is checked against the document it comes from, and the critical works named are listed on the last page.
