A Level English Language
Revision Guide
The whole of A level English language in eighteen pages: how the course is assessed, then the five language levels the DfE names, with pages on sound and form, meaning and use, grammar in depth, and pragmatics and discourse in depth, then context and audience, analysing unseen data, spoken language, language and the individual, variation, language change, attitudes to language, child language, the linguistic investigation, producing language and the connections across the course, closing on the mistakes that cost marks and a final knowledge check. Every page has a drawing made for it, three ideas, a worked example in three steps, three misconceptions and eight cover-and-test questions.

A level English language is one subject taught from several specifications. The Department for Education sets a short list of what every one of them must cover, and Ofqual sets the five assessment objectives and the non-examination assessment. This guide teaches that common ground, quoting both word for word, and says plainly where a specification goes further.
The DfE's document is two pages long. It names five language levels and, at A level, the varieties of English, language and identity, independent investigation and the connections across the course. It names no theories, and no topic called language change or child language. This guide covers those too, because the current specifications we checked include them in some form, and it marks them as topics to check against your own specification rather than as requirements.
Every example text in it is invented for the guide and labelled as illustrative: none is a transcript, a published text or research data. Every calculated figure is worked out from the data drawn beside it, and every quotation from the DfE and Ofqual is checked against the document it comes from. Named studies are listed on the last page, so a student can find the originals.
