A level Art and Design ends in a timed exam: the supervised session where students make the final piece for the board-set task. But there is no written paper. Every mark, from the first preparatory sketch to that final piece, comes from the work itself, so the guide is about that work: how the marks are made up, what each assessment objective looks like on the page, how to record and annotate so that it earns credit, how to read and write about a work, and how to plan the task the exam board sets. Wording from the DfE and Ofqual is quoted exactly, and everything each board decides for itself is left to your specification, so the guide holds whichever board you are sitting.
It is built around pictures rather than paragraphs. The same still life appears in six media, from a photograph through graphite, charcoal, pen and ink wash and watercolour to oil; a sphere shows the seven zones of light and shadow where they really fall, and every page has worked examples, the misconceptions that cost marks, and a cover-and-test grid. Every picture was made for the guide, so there are no rights questions in using it with a class.
