The assessment objectives for GCSE maths are set nationally. The three papers that test them are not the same shape at all.

AQA and Pearson Edexcel both open with the non-calculator paper and mark the qualification out of 240. OCR marks it out of 300, and puts the non-calculator paper second.

Ask which exam board rewards reasoning over standard technique and the honest answer, for GCSE maths, is none of them — not because the question is unanswerable, but because the assessment objectives are set nationally and every board publishes the same split.

AQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR all weight Foundation tier 50% AO1 — recalling facts and carrying out standard procedures — with the remaining half split evenly between AO2 (reasoning) and AO3 (problem-solving). Higher tier shifts every board the same way: 40% AO1, 30% AO2, 30% AO3. Check one board’s objectives and, for GCSE maths, you have effectively checked all three.

The objectives don’t move. The papers do.

What actually differs is the shape of the three papers a student sits, and it differs in two ways that matter for planning: how many marks the qualification is out of, and where the non-calculator paper sits in the sequence.

Why the total marks are not just arithmetic

Three papers of 80 marks and three papers of 100 marks produce the same grades — Ofqual standardises across boards, so a grade 7 on OCR represents the same standard as a grade 7 on AQA even though the raw mark total is different. But a department reading its own internal data — mock scores, a spreadsheet of marks toward a predicted grade, a grade boundary copied from a previous year on a different board — has to rescale rather than assume. A mark of 150 means something different out of 240 than out of 300, and the difference is nine percentage points.

It moves in one direction — specification, curriculum, teaching, assessment, intervention, examination — because that is the order in which the decisions get made.

The paper that moves

The more practical difference is where the non-calculator paper sits. AQA and Edexcel both open the exam series with it — Paper 1, no calculator, then two calculator papers. OCR puts its non-calculator paper second, in the middle of the sequence. A revision plan that drills non-calculator technique in the run-up to “the first paper” is correctly ordered for two boards in three and wrong-ordered for the third — the middle paper on OCR is still the one without a calculator, and treating it as the second calculator paper because of where it falls in the week is an easy, avoidable mistake.

One check, once a year

None of this changes what is taught. It changes how a department reads its own data and how it sequences revision against the paper a student is actually about to sit — and both are worth confirming once, at the start of the year, rather than assumed from whichever board the department taught last.
